Black tunic

Reinventing the LBD

Black tunic

I’ve had this little black dress in my wardrobe for many, many years. It was a bargain buy at $15 (reduced from $60) and I loved it as a sexy, out-on-the-town outfit. That is, until I no longer went ‘out-on-the-town’. Truth is, I probably should have culled it a long time ago because I no longer wore it. I’m so glad I didn’t though because I’ve recently fallen in love with it again.  It has a new life!

It took me a while to embrace the trend of wearing a shirt under a dress as a fashion choice. It looked a bit too much like a uniform for my liking. Maybe that was because I used to wear a pinafore style dress with a collared shirt underneath when I was a flight attendant back in 2009. I liked the uniform but wouldn’t have chosen anything like it as my daily wear. That is, until recently, when I saw a fashion blogger rocking a tunic with a billowing shirt and over the knee boots. The outfit personified style. I immediately thought of my little black dress and how I could create a similar look with it, alongside other items I had in my wardrobe.  A serious try-on session began and I came up with a whole bunch of outfits with different tops and shoes. It was so much fun!

The great thing about this look is that most people already have a similar dress hanging in their wardrobe. That means you can replicate an outfit just like this without having to go out and spend money. Most styles of tops will work- short sleeve, long sleeve, t-shirts and light sweaters will do the trick. Your shoe choice is pretty much endless- sneakers, brogues, boots and heels will all do nicely.

I get so excited when I discover a whole new range of outfits using items that I already have in my wardrobe. It’s a budget shopper’s dream 🙂 I hope I’ve inspired you to consider the shirt-under-a-dress trend if you haven’t already done so. It’s a great way to create a fun and stylish outfit that’s just as perfect for date night as it is for a day of shopping.

Have a fabulous week! Love from Kylie xxx
